Poltergeist Caught on Tape

What Are Ghosts?

We have all been raised with ghosts in our lives. Cartoons, stories & Legends, Halloween, and deceased relatives that we wonder about. We all die so it's part of our heritage, no matter what culture that is. We know as far back as man has been writing symbols on walls that we've contemplated spirits from another realm.

Ghosts are more than deceased people. If they were just that, there would be nothing to talk about. Crossing over to the next dimension doesn't make you a ghost. ?t's when you come back and let your presence be known among the living. They move an object, provide a fleeting glance, come to us in our dreams, and whisper to us though we may not be able to see them. They are souls that have something to show, do or say to us.

Why do they come back? What is so compelling to them that they are not in final rest where they are in the afterlife? I think there are many reasons. For some, it's unfinished business. For others, it's pure love. They simply don't want to let go. Something strong exists within them to want to come back to this realm to hold dear, expose or endure something strong to them. I think it applies to the living as well. Why do we cling to thoughts of those that have passed, even to those that are still living? I guarantee you it's for many of the same reasons they do. Just because we leave this dimension doesn't mean we stop being human in our thoughts and desires. What we are here is what we take with us. The same love, fear, and desires don't cease when we do.

I think ghosts are just those souls strong enough to break through the dimensions to express their will or cling to some past. There are several ways they can do this. One of the most common are those that have just recently crossed over. Their energy is still strong enough that it's possible for them to be seen and even communicated with just a few hours or days after their departure. One might call this their etheric presence. It fades shortly after the physical perishes but it too diminishes quickly, like an aura that no longer has a host.

Equal to the pull of love is anguish. More than not, a ghost is a person whose life ended abruptly and sometimes violently. This can be known as a haunting because they are haunted by a life now gone. The haunting is from their thoughts and their presence become testimony to that.

If you think about it, ghosts are just you and I. What will become of us when we move on? Will we come back? Will we want to? I guess we'll find out.

Ghosts: What Are They?

Do you believe in ghosts? The many thousands of reports from all over the world leave little doubt that haunting experiences are quite real. But what causes them and why?

You've seen them depicted in movies, read stories of their unnerving activities and have seen television shows and documentaries sensationalizing them. You have probably seen rare photos of them and have likely heard of first-hand ghostly encounters from friends and relatives. I receive dozens of reports from readers every month. Perhaps you have even seen a ghost yourself.

But what are ghosts? I'll give you the answer straight out: No one knows for certain.

There are, however, many theories to explain the thousands upon thousands of documented experiences that people around the world have had since the beginning of recorded history. Ghosts and hauntings seem to be a relatively common part of the human experience. And there appear to be several types of ghosts or hauntings, and more than one theory may be needed to explain them all.

Dead people

The traditional view of ghosts is that they are the spirits of dead people that for some reason are "stuck" between this plane of existence and the next, often as a result of some tragedy or trauma. Many ghost hunters and psychics believe that such earth-bound spirits don't know they are dead. Veteran ghost hunter Hans Holzer says, "A ghost is a human being who has passed out of the physical body, usually in a traumatic state and is not aware usually of his true condition. We are all spirits encased in a physical body. At the time of passing, our spirit body continues into the next dimension. A ghost, on the other hand, due to trauma, is stuck in our physical world and needs to be released to go on."

Ghosts exist in a kind of limbo in which they haunt the scenes of their deaths or locations that were pleasant to them in life. Very often, these types of ghosts are able to interact with the living. They are, on some level, aware of the living and react to being seen on the occasions that they materialize. Some psychics claim to be able to communicate with them. And when they do, they often try to help these spirits to understand that they are dead and to move on to the next stage of their existence.

Residual Hauntings or Recordings

Some ghosts appear to be mere recordings on the environment in which they once existed. A civil war soldier is seen on repeated occasions staring out a window at a house where he once stood guard. A dead child's laughter is heard echoing in a hallway where she often played. There are even cases of ghost cars and trains that can still be heard and sometimes seen, even though they are long gone. These types of ghosts do not interact with or seem to be aware of the living. Their appearance and actions are always the same. They are like spirit-level recordings - residual energies - that replay over and over again.

"A traumatic moment in time leaves an indelible impression on the building or area," says Strange Nation in "What Is a Ghost?," "replaying itself for eternity. This could be anything from a 'glimpse of the past' - a recreation of some traumatic or emotion-laden event - to footsteps up and down a hallway."

What causes these recordings to be made and how and why they are played back is a mystery. "How and why past events are recorded and replayed repetitiously is not understood," writes Lauren Forcella. "Whatever the actual mechanism, it apparently possesses longevity as the encore performances of a haunting can continue for decades or longer. Generally, the haunting is a fragment or portion of an actual event."

These kinds of ghosts may be the most common. These spirits usually appear shortly after their deaths to people close to them. They are aware of their deaths and can interact with the living. They most often bring messages of comfort to their loved ones, to say that they are well and happy, and not to grieve for them. These ghosts appear briefly and usually only once. It is as if they intentionally return with their messages for the express purpose of helping the living cope with their loss.

"This category commonly involves one-time visits to someone with whom the apparition has close emotional ties," says Lauren Forcella at Paranormal Investigations, who calls these ghosts "crisis apparitions." "Though the encounter usually seems to be a type of farewell, sometimes important and useful information is relayed to the 'viewer.' Though dying is the most common crisis, other life-threatening situations can also trigger apparitional visits."

This type of haunting is the most feared by people because it has the greatest ability to affect our physical world. Poltergeists are blamed for unexplained noises, such as wall-banging, rapping, footsteps and even music. They take our possessions and hide them, only to return them later. They turn on faucets, slam doors, turn lights on and off, and flush toilets. They throw things across rooms. They have been known to pull on people's clothing or hair. The malevolent ones even slap and scratch the living. It is because of these sometimes "mean-spirited" manifestations that poltergeists are considered by some investigators to be demonic in nature.

Other investigators, however, believe that poltergeist activity is not caused by ghosts at all, but by certain living people under stress. "During a poltergeist experience," writes Lauren Forcella, "the agent, in an attempt to relieve emotional stress, unknowingly causes the physical disturbances using mental forces. The mental mechanism that allows the poltergeist agent to unconsciously cause these physical disturbances is called psychokinesis."

The skeptics' point of view - if they are willing to admit there is anything to haunting experiences at all - is that they are all in our minds, or are products of our own minds. Ghosts, they say, are psychological phenomena: we see them because we expect to or want to see them. A grieving widow sees her dead husband because she needs to; she needs the comfort of knowing that he is alright and happy in the next world. Her mind produces the experience to help itself cope with the stress of the loss. Since we know so little about the power and capacity of our own minds, it's possible that they can even produce physical manifestations, such as apparitions and noises - projections that even others may be able to see and hear. But they are not "real" in any sense, say the skeptics, just the conjurings of powerful imaginations.

Are there such things as ghosts? The phenomena of ghosts and hauntings are very real experiences. It is their true cause and nature that is the ongoing mystery.
Ghosts Gone Bad

The premise of this article is that ghostly beings (human or otherwise) dwell on the other side and while there are garden variety good ones, there can sometimes be bad ones.

Bad is purely a subjective word, to some degree, but there are core components; power, greed, lust, and all things base in nature. A ghost gone bad is an engorged component of one or all of these. It is the succubus, the demon, or the legendary nightmare hag.

The succubus is caught up in sexual fervor; the demon loves the power over frail mortal minds, and the hag delights in torture and fear. There too are souls that while having shed their physical shell in death, bring to the other side the one thing they cannot readily shed -- the wounded or inflated ego -- hell bent on mortal suffering.

"Ghosts gone bad" is a scenario that happened to me for a period in my youth. Typical of many teenagers (especially these days), I was wracked with conflicting feelings: separating parents and a myriad of other negative emotions, which would attract such a ghost. I'm sorry to say I was playing with the Ouija Board at the time and having very impressive results-- so much so that ? was later labeled a witch. But this portal, and my youth, beckoned something I had not anticipated -- a ghostly predator.

It took me some time to figure it out. Our pet Labrador wouldn't come to my room at night. It would stand at the doorway and growl at "something" inside. My father once heard screams originating from my room in the middle of the nightly only to rush in and find nothing but my sister and I sleeping. What was it? Had he imaged it? A year later my father left the family and this added unhappiness led to an escalation of the incidents. The room would grow cold; I'd become conscious in the middle of the night and feel fingers clawing at my side. My tongue seemed to swell inside my mouth (imagined or otherwise, it didn't seem to matter to me at the time) and I'd try to scream but my body was somehow a powerless prey to a force beyond my control.

You might say it was my imagination or troubled youth, which would be a logical conclusion, considering my father had left, but I invited friends over for their own investigations into this realm of suffering that had become my life. In one particular event, a male friend of mine came over and was quite cocky and sure that not only was nothing amiss, but even if I were there, he'd be the one to drive it out. I was very hopeful indeed, as I was so tired of the sleepless, frightening nights. I just wanted it over, if you can imagine.

So one evening when we had the house to ourselves, he came over to "investigate and propel" what he thought were the ghostly intruders. In retrospect, one can say it's one's ego over another, is it not? Regardless, he came to my home and was doing what I would call a very inexperienced exorcism. He would shake his fist, talk loudly at the room and say vehemently for them to go away. I could feel the energy do the very opposite - not to be quelled, but to boil. I actually grew quite frightened at this time and cautioned him, "Do you really know what you are doing?"

It later became evident that he did not. But when he left for home that night, I did not know this.

When he departed, I was amazed at the transformation. The place felt so amazingly pure and devoid of negative energies! I thought perhaps his exorcism had worked. My room felt great and there was no cold air. Nothing was hanging over me like a wet dank blanket. I felt freer then than I had in months. I said to myself, "It must have worked!"

My friend told me the next day that he had returned to his parents' house where he lived and went to bed for the evening. He was awoken in the middle of the night by a sound coming from his stereo. How and why would the stereo come on by itself? Then, as he tuned his ears to listen, the dials started spinning through the channels by themselves. He later told me chills ran up his spine. He did not know what was doing this but it couldn't have been any coincidence that he had just been to my house and attempted to exorcise ghosts.

Worse yet, when he lay in bed, virtually frightened into immobility, his closet interior came crashing down. The entire wardrobe was yanked to the floor with such a smash that his parents came running down the stairs.

They frantically asked him what was going on. All he could say is that he had just come from my house and tried to exorcize some poltergeists. You can imagine their concern.

In short, outside of school, he was no longer allowed to see me.

So what happened to that ghost that dwelled in my room? It returned very shortly and the pestering continued. I eventually moved in with a nice family and it followed me there too. It took awhile, but as I grew more positive it's hold over me weakened. It eventually disappeared altogether.

How Can Mediums Talk to Ghosts?

First, I think we are all capable of talking to ghosts, but we don't work on the skills that would be needed to do this. And most of us don't want to see, hear or feel a ghost! ?t would be rather unnerving, if not terrifying, to look up from a moment of respite and see some blank eyed little girl starting at you, mouthing something you can't hear. Visions of The Shinning become all too real at this point and nothing we want to mess with.

But then, there are those that are born natural Mediums. Their ability to detect outside the normal human frequency, like many animals, is heightened. Their E.S.P., or extra sensory perception, extends beyond the normal physical senses. They simply are able to tune into a frequency band greater than most. Some can see ghosts; some can only hear them, while other Mediums are shown visions and guidance in their mind's eye, or "third eye" from the beyond. These are the John Edwards of the world, or the crime solving specialists on the fascinating show, Haunting Evidence on Court TV.

If you personally are interested in learning the skills of the Medium, there are things you can do.

First, visit haunted places. It doesn't have to be a frightening place which will close you down to the experience, but a location were many lives had crossed over, like an old battle field, a cemetery, or a known haunted hotel. There are plenty of books out there that detail these places throughout the United States, Europe and elsewhere.

Second, find a place where you can be very quiet and still. You are trying to open up that sixth sense which has been dormant for a very long time. We all have this capability, but like any muscle, it's become weak over time, maybe an entire life-time.

Third, start shutting out the thoughts in your mind that are racing about. You need an open receptacle (the quiet mind) to allow very soft utterings from beyond. You can't hear if you're too busy talking in your own mind (much like any conversation). The more you go into a meditative state, known as Alpha, the more you'll open up to hearing frequencies not normally heard.

Next, after you are quiet, calm, and clear, extend a request that a positive entity make itself be known to you. Then, just relax, wait and listen. If the situation is right, they will try and make themselves be heard in some way. And hearing is easier to attain than breaking through the physical dimension with actual matter, so expect that. It will probably be something short and perhaps blurted out, so don't expect a huge dialog, more like one or two words, or a hurried rush of whispering.

The few times I've heard ghosts, I was quiet and calm. Usually coming out of sleep, meditating, or spending time alone in a quiet and solitary state --all ideal for extended communications with the dearly departed.

Of course, once you open this type of ability, you may have started a new journey for yourself and one you may not entirely want! So be sure this is the type of thing that really interests you. If not, keep that TV going and stay away from the cemetery!

Poltergeist in a haunted house

Ghost Facts and FAQs by Michael Tasker

A ghost is an evil spirit with many powers. They use these powers to haunt the living and perform tricks. Unlike in the movies, ghosts are probably impervious to magical attack, and cannot be destroyed.

If ghosts get too far away from their bodies, their powers weaken. Though they may move freely they must visit the area near their old bodies to replenish their energy. This is why I have never seen a ghost on a plane.

The first is a spectral orb, which looks like a ball of light. They are most often seen in graveyards and in haunted houses. The second is ectoplasmic mist, the second form of a spirit They are also found in graveyards and in haunted houses. An Apparition is the last phase, this is the strongest of the spirit phases. The more physical they look, and the brighter they glow. the stronger their powers are. Mainly found in graveyards and haunted houses. Most ghost apparitions are human (eg pirate/ Hitler), but some can be werewolves, goblins or monsters.

Simple answer? Hell yes. A "Demon" is one of few creatures from hell who still walk this earth and are very dangerous. What you are more likely to come in contact with are "lesser demons" or evil spirits. They are far stronger than ghosts and differ in appearance. A ghost is a white or blue colour, while a demon is gray, brown or black. They look just like a shadow figure. They have various coloured eyes based on their level of energy. Red eyes - very strong, Yellow eyes- Strong, Teal eyes- semi-strong. Their may be other colours of eyes, but I have only seen these three myself. They generally will attempt to kill you or take over your mind. If there is more than one, they can combine energy to cause harm. If you see a demon. Get away from it. Fast.

Ghosts, even when not seen by the human eye, can show up on photos. This is because they are a different type of light that our eyes can't see (called ectoplasmic spectral light). Under night vision, you can see ghosts. They can be picked up for it amplifies any type of light. Orbs generally are never seen by the human eye, for they move too fast and are very cunning. A camera can pick them up though, in many of orb photos you can see that they are moving. Dont use digital !! See Dr. Ken & Lynn's page for more on that.

No. Do not mess with ouija boards!! All it takes is two people concentrating on a particular spirit to bring it there. Once it is there, it is very hard to get it back. Think of it as a gateway between dimensions. Although most of the time ouija boards are fun for asking questions, in which the answer is given through the movements of your hands by your unconscious , it can be dangerous if it is used in any way to contact spirits. It is likely you will invoke Tal'Kaedoth of the Dark Realm, or at very least Ma'Chok, the Devourer of Souls.
